Geography Interactive map Sergey Nikolaevich Tolstoy February 17, Yasnaya Polyana - August 23, mind. Pirovo Krapivensky Wife: From June 7, Sergey stood out among his brothers to stench and beauty. The witty, brilliant, he was generously gifted with various talents: he painted perfectly, was an excellent musician and mathematician. All paths were opened for this outstanding young man who easily achieved success in his studies, especially at Kazan University, where he was a student of the great Lobachevsky.
Tolstoy portrayed Seryozha under the name of Volodya Irteniev in "adolescence." He recalled the admiration that inspired him with his brother’s ability to juggle with “sinuses and cosinuses”, seemed inaccessible to his understanding. However, Sergey did not make a brilliant career as expected from him: he was too proud and deprived of vanity. The idea that it is necessary to yell before the powers that be in order to make a career, hesitated to him and turned away from his official activity.
Only a year he was able to stay in military service in the guard and hastened to resign. Sergey settled in his estate Pirovo, where he had an equestrian factory and a huge psarny. A passionate and successful hunter, he produced so many seasoned wolves that their bones were enough to make a fence for one of the alleys of Pirogovsky Park. In the Tolstoy family, everyone loved gypsy music, but in Sergey it turned into irresistible passion.
Speaking days and nights long from the gypsies, Sergey fell in love with the famous singer of the gypsy choir Maria Shishkin. After long negotiations with the elders of the choir, he managed to buy Masha and take her to Pirovo. She gave birth to eleven children from whom they raised only four. In his youth, Sergei considered the lion to be “a little small”, treated him with great condescension, helped to pay debts and get out of scandalous stories.
He did not seriously accept the next hobby of his younger brother - neither the intention of Leo to enter the civil service, nor his attempt to improve the life of the Yasnaya Polish peasants. He treated all these undertakings mockingly. Everything changed when the story “Childhood” was published in September. Mocking condescension was replaced by admiration and respect. Sergei congratulated his brother, adding that from the very first lines he guessed the author hidden under mysterious initials.
Leo was extremely flattered and wrote to Sergey that he was waiting for his comments with great impatience than the reviews of literary criticism. However, Sergey remained ironic and truthful and mercilessly judged those pages of Tolstoy prose that seemed unsuccessful to him and when Tolstoy became a worldwide recognized authority. In September, Lev married Sofya Andreevna Bers; Sergei prepared everything in Yasnaya Polyana by the arrival of the young and met them on the porch of the Yasnaya Polyansky house.
Her younger sister of the sixteen -year -old Tanya, cheerful, impulsive, attracted everyone with an excess of “living life” came to Sofya Andreevna. In order not to tell for a long time, it is enough to recall: Tolstoy wrote to Natasha Rostov in the War and the World. Sergei Nikolaevich fell in love with Tanya, she was twenty years younger than him, but her response feeling was deep and serious.
In a fit of love, Sergei made an offer, and Tatyana was already considered his bride. However, Sergey Nikolaevich was to settle family affairs: he lived with Gypsy Masha for sixteen years, had three children from her and she expected the fourth. In his soul, his love entered into a confrontation with duty, he did not know what to decide on. He admitted to his sister Maria Nikolaevna: “I love Tanya passionately, but when I return home and see Masha, such a submissive in my silent grief, my heart breaks.
When I am going to announce her about the break, I see her on my knees in front of the icons ... ”After two years of waiting, realizing that Sergei Nikolaevich was unable to leave his family, Tatyana wrote him a decisive letter in which she freed him from the word given to them. She was desperate, tried to poison, fell ill with a nervous fever. Two years later, Tatyana married her cousin Sasha Kuzminsky.
As for Sergei Nikolaevich, he decided to legalize his relationship with Masha. On the eve of these two weddings, the two former lovers had a chance to suddenly meet: on a narrow country road, the crews rushed past at close range, Sergey and Tanya recognized each other and bowed silently. It was a farewell of two loved people. Sergei Nikolaevich married Masha and lived the rest of his life, submitting to fate and experiencing secret bitterness.
Once he was fascinated by the youth, beauty and talent of his gypsy, but over time, the difference between the environment and their cultural level made itself felt more and more. Old, Sergey felt more and more lonely. His children delivered more griefs than joy: about the son of Gregory, who began to live on his own early, went bad rumors, Vera's beloved daughter gave birth to Bashkir living in a clear meadow, some rogue seduced his daughter Barbara.Sergei Nikolaevich adored his daughters and was intolerantly treated to all young applicants who tried to take care of them.
How in this paternal jealousy he looked like the old prince Volkonsky! Sergey, this real aristocrat, brilliant and cheerful, became irritable by old age, looked at everything with a sarcastic grin. He lived in his Pirogov in solitude, almost a recluse, in three rooms of a large house. He abandoned all luxury, from the servant, he prepared tea for himself, and cleaned himself in the rooms.
For days he worked in an office with closed shutters - he checked the estate accounts, read a lot. Lev Nikolaevich jokingly said that Sergei was working more on economic documents than he worked on the manuscripts of “War and Peace”. The gloomy Pirogovo was transformed when the nephews and nephews appeared there from Yasnaya Polyana - the children of Lev Nikolayevich adored Uncle Seryozha.
With their appearance, fun began, music, everyone sang, Sergey Nikolaevich and Masha too. And then suddenly the former Seryozha came to life again - cheerful, carefree, cordial. And when Masha sang, everyone experienced the charm and power of gypsy singing. The hobby for him inherited the younger generation of the Tolstoy family. In the year Sergey Nikolaevich was seriously ill; He rejected sympathy and refused all help.
Two months before his death, his eyes flowed out, he could swallow only liquid. Despite the cruel suffering and thinness, he was still beautiful ... The inevitable end was approaching. According to his testament, Sergei Nikolaevich was buried in a pine coffin in a rural cemetery in a neighboring village. Lev Nikolaevich carried a coffin with the body of his brother to the cemetery church.
Sergei had to live another life - he had everything for this: beauty, dignity, talent. The famous commander or diplomat, or writer could come out of him - he wrote such wonderful letters! In the declining years, he apparently realized that he was in vain neglected his talents, hence his bitterness, misanthropy, a severe atmosphere in Pirogov. Here sometimes heard the stifled moans coming from his office.
Was it a fear of an impending death? Or pain about lost? Love died, marriage did not bring joy, the children did not console - life failed. Seryozha Tolstoy wrote about his brother in his memoirs: “I respected Nikolenka, I was a comrade with Mitenka, but I admired Seryozha and imitated him, loved him, wanted to be him. I admired his beautiful appearance, his singing - he always sang - with his drawing, his fun and, especially, oddly enough, his spontaneity, his egoism.
I always remembered myself, always realized, always sensed, mistaken or not, what others think of me and feel about me, and this spoiled me the joys of life. From this, probably, I especially loved in others the opposite of this - spontaneity, selfishness. And for this he especially loved Seryozha ... It was human life, very beautiful, but completely incomprehensible to me ...
